Message from the CTRC Director

The Clinical Research Center on the 6th floor of the CTRC is now operating as UB's first centralized clinical research facility to assist and support clinical investigators at UB. We will be surveying researchers to assess needs in an effort to tailor our services to best support clinical research. The CTRC continues to grow with more new faculty recruits with active research programs and an Imaging Center that will open soon.

CTRC Building Update

A spectacular suspended sculpture was installed in the atrium in August. Designed exclusively for the space in the CTRC, this signature piece was created by Talley Fisher, who has designed sculptures that are displayed in public and corporate spaces in North America and Asia. She was on site for a week to oversee the installation of the sculpture. The artwork is fabricated from anodized perforated aluminum suspended on stainless steel beaded chains. On August 2nd, student trainees supported by 6 different summer research programs presented their work in a day-long program that included 98 posters and 10 oral presentations.

Bruce R. Troen, MD, recently recruited as Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine, has moved his laboratory into the CTRC. Dr. Troen is internationally recognized for his clinical and translational work in geriatric medicine. His research interests include osteoporosis, longevity and aging mechanisms, and frailty. Dr. Troen is also investigating the molecular basis for bone resorption and vitamin D supplementation in the elderly. Dr. Troen, whose laboratory is on the 8th floor of the CTRC, joined the Department of Medicine faculty from the University of Miami.

The Molecular and Translational Imaging Center on the 7th floor of the CTRC will provide a state-of-the-art resource for investigators throughout the Buffalo Translational Consortium. The Imaging Center is devoted exclusively to research. The leadership team is in place with Dr. John Canty as Director and Dr. Robert Zivadinov as Director of MRI. It is anticipated that the center will be operational this fall.
