Welcome to the monthly newsletter of the Buffalo Clinical and Translational Research Center. The purpose of the newsletter is to update leadership, faculty, trainees, and community partners of the Buffalo Translational Consortium on activities.

Message from the CTRC Director

These are exciting times for clinical and translational research in Buffalo:

  • Research groups will be moving into the CTRC over the summer.
  • Initial work on the RPCI Genomics Center Pilot Project supported by the NYS Regional Economic Development Council has been initiated.
  • The UB Institute for Healthcare Informatics will open in July.
  • Planning for the building of the new medical school on the Buffalo Niagara Campus is in full swing.

The Biostatistics Resource provides biostatistics and bioinformatics support to researchers and trainees in the Buffalo Translational Consortium.

Key personnel have expertise in:

  • Clinical trial design and analysis
  • Biostatistics
  • Statistical genetics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Quantitative epidemiology
  • Public health informatics

The Statistical Consulting Lab headed by Dr. Terry Mashtare is available at an hourly rate (first hour free) for small consulting projects and grant application support.

The Department of Biostatistics has recently recruited two new outstanding faculty members:

Dr. Rachael Hageman Blair
Assistant Professor of Biostatistics (UB)

  • Expertise in: mathematical biology, optimization, numerical analysis, structural biology, inverse problems, statistics and scientific computing.
  • Research focus on: methodology development for mathematical modeling and simulation of metabolic and genetic networks.

Dr. Qianqian Zhu
Assistant Member, Biostatistics Core Resource (RPCI)

  • Expertise in: genetic studies utilizing approaches of genome-wide association studies and next-generation sequencing.
  • Research focus on: dissecting the contribution of genetic factors and their interactions to complex traits in human populations.
CTRC Building Update

The CTRC is ready for the installation of equipment and furniture which will take place over the next two months or so. It is anticipated that research groups will move into the building during the months of July and August.

NEWS UPDATES & UPCOMING EVENTS

A Ribbon Cutting for the GVI and CTRC, attended by approximately 350 people, was held on May 24th. The event was a celebration of the partnership between Kaleida and UB that was instrumental in accomplishing the construction of this spectacular building which places clinicians and researchers in adjacent space. The building is one of only a handful like it in the nation.

A total of 27 applications from medical students from 11 different schools were received for 6 fellowships. Based on a rigorous review by the T35 Steering Committee, 6 UB students were awarded fellowships. They start their projects this week.

Alex Adjei MD PhD, Senior Vice President of Clinical Research and Katherine Anne Gioia Chair in Cancer Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute has received the inaugural Drug Development Research Professorship Award from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The funded professorship will support Dr. Adjei’s efforts to mentor junior colleagues in the areas of drug development, clinical trial design and regulatory science.
