Hauptmann Woodward Institute is a world class facility that specializes in Xray crystallography and molecular structure determination. As a BTC partner, HWI contributes importantly in structural determination of drugs and drug targets.  Dr. Michael G. Malkowski, an HWI senior research scientist, has received a $6.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish the Membrane Protein Structural Biology Consortium as one of nine centers in the US responsible for determining membrane protein structures within a larger NIH biology-based initiative. This project is designed both to solve structures of medically important membrane proteins and to improve the available technologies for solving such structures.  This initiative contributes importantly to the BTC by enhancing drug development, particularly related to membrane protein targets.
