On July 15, Umesh Sharma, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and a CTSI Scholar in the Mentored Career Development Program, was granted a five-year, $986,850 KO8 award for his proposal: "Galectin-3-Mediated Post-Ischemic Myocardial Dysfunction and Its Inhibition by a Novel Peptide N-Acetyl-Seryl-Aspartyl-Lysyl-Proline."

Sharma is an aspiring physician-scientist working on the mechanism of galectin-3-induced cardiac fibrosis in the development of lethal cardiac arrhythmias with research mentor John Canty, Jr., MD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Medicine, chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and deputy director of UB's Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
